NATIONAL SERVICE POSTINGS ANNOUNCED.
The National Service Scheme (NSS) has deployed a total of 50 000 personnel to serve in various sectors of the economy as part of their national service.
Mr. Vincent Senam Kuagbenu, Executive Director NSS disclosed this yesterday at a press conference to officially announce postings for the 2010/2011 service year.
He said over 32,375 personnel have been posted to the educational sector, 5,135 to the health sector, 200 are to go into promotion of tourism, and 2,281 are to provide support in the private sector.
Mr. Kuagbenu continued that 10,278 personnel have been posted to government institutions to provide support for governance institutions, 400 personnel are to go into forestry, 170 personnel are to provide support services for Persons with Disability (PWD), and 200 have been posted to the Ghana highway authority.
According to him, 400 national personnel have been posted to various houses of chiefs to provide support for the chieftaincy institution.
The Executive Director said national service provides newly qualified graduates the opportunity to have exposure on the job both in the public and private sectors as part of their civic responsibility to the state.
He continued that through national service the youth are able to appreciate the challenges that deprived communities face on a daily basis.
“Through the art of serving the spirit of volunteerism and sacrifice is created in the youth” he added.
“ it also provides user agencies the opportunity to meet their manpower demands and afford communities that would otherwise have difficulty in accessing mainstream development initiatives, access to improved social services through community service” he said.
Mr. Kuagbenu reminded all employers that it is an offence to employ someone who has not done national service.
He therefore called on all employers to ascertain from every employee, upon his appointment whether or not he has done national service.
The Executive Director appealed to community leaders who will have national service personnel posted to their communities to assist them in all ways that they can.
Touching on the issue of newly trained doctors undertaking national service, he said plans are far advanced for the first of medical students to undertake national service.
“Doctors like all other persons in Ghana are enjoined by law to undergo national service. No qualified person shall be excused from serving the national for any reason” Mr. Kuagbenu emphasized.
Mr. Kuagbenu explained that due to the on-going national census, commencement of national service has been postponed to 15th October 2010.
He however said national service applicants can start accessing their postings on the national service website which is www.nssghana.org from Monday 4th October.
He explained that many of the enumerators are national service applicants therefore commencing national service will disrupt the on-going census.
