2nd EDITION OF GYANDOH AND GRIFFITHS SOURCEBOOK OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL LAW OF GHANA LAUNCHED
The second edition of Gyandoh and Griffiths Sourcebook of the Constitutional Law of Ghana was launched in Accra on Thursday.
The book which encapsulates all of Ghana’s legal history from 1824 is the second edition after the first edition was published over 40 years ago.
The book is written by Emeritus Prof. S.O Gyandoh Jnr. and John Griffiths. It is edited by Prof. Kofi Kumado and S.O Gyandoh Jnr.
Mr. Julius Ansah, Justice of the Supreme Court in a speech on behalf of the Chief Justice, Mrs. Georgina Theodora Wood, said the constitutional history of Ghana dates as far back as 200 years, however most of that has been told through the voice of foreigners.
She added that in the process some of the history has been distorted. This she continued has occasioned the need for home-grown story tellers who will be able to tell the nation’s story accurately.
The Chief Justice said this need fuelled the collaboration between Prof. Kofi Kumado, former student of the Legon Law Faculty and Emeritus Prof. Samuel Otu Gyandoh Jnr., former Dean of the Faculty of Law to produce the book.
Launching the book, Prof. Nii Ashie Kotey, Faculty of Law, Legon called on all lawyers and legal practitioners to ensure that they have copies of the book since it serves as a good reference point.
He called on the authors to ensure that the third edition of the book does not take so long to get published.
Prof. Kotey congratulated the authors for their effort.
Giving the history of the book, Emeritus Prof. S O Gyandoh Jnr. said four decades ago he was paired with an American scholar by name John Griffiths to teach constitutional law at the faculty of law, Legon.
“I realized at the time that the teaching syllabus was dominated by British Constitutional Law principles. This did not seem appropriate to me seeing Ghana had become independent over a decade ago, we therefore decided to put together something that would reflect the Ghanaian situation” he added.
He expressed gratitude to the publishers of the book for painstakingly ensuring that the book was finished in time.
The book published by Black Mask Ltd. is in two volumes. Volume one is in two parts whiles volume two is in three parts. Volume one deals with constitutional instruments. Volume two on the other hand deals with cases of constitutional significance decided over the years by the courts.
